Active Retirement - What is it?
The Active Retirement Movement aims to help older people have
a full, happy and healthy retirement by offering organised
opportunities for a wide range of activities - holidays, outings
and socials; creative and learning programmes; indoor and outdoor
sports; and community work.
Founded in 1978, the movement is based on a network of associations
which is affiliated to the Federation of Active Retirement
Associations (FARA).

Membership is open to retired men and women, over 55 years.
The existing group or association membership totals over 15,500.
Members are encouraged to stay fit and involved. We aim to
maintain the dignity, independence, and a sense of purpose
of retired people.
- Our philosophy is based on self-help
- We do things by ourselves for ourselves
- We draw on the skills and experience of our members
- We pay membership fees and cover other expenses
- We do not raise fees nor accept funds for our personal
benefit
- We encourage continued involvement of our members
in the community
