Gospel Reflection

On the road to Emmaus

Lent 2010

Trócaire would like to thank everyone for their huge generosity to the Haiti appeal.  Donations from the Irish public have surpassed all expectations - ROI: €3,486,815 and NI: Stg £979,643.  Thanks to this support Trócaire will help thousands of survivors to rebuild their lives in Haiti.

However, this Lent Trócaire reminds us that, while earthquakes and natural disasters attract global attention, there are millions of people around the world who will go to bed hungry tonight. During Lent over 600,000 children will die from hunger and diseases caused by hunger. The total number of people that were killed by the recent earthquake in Haiti, is less than half that number. This hunger crisis is taking place away from the TV cameras and global attention, in small, rural villages all over the developing world.

Trócaire Lenten Campaign
Trócaire Lenten Boxes are available at the back of the church. Please support Trócaire’s Lenten campaign this year in whatever way you can.

Year for Priests

Year of St Paul

Pope Benedict XVI inaugurated a "Year for Priests" on 19 June, 2009, the 150th anniversary of the “dies natalis” of John Mary Vianney (the Curé of Ars), the patron saint of parish priests worldwide. Read the full text of the Pope's letter here.

Who is St. John Vianney?
St John Marie Vianney was ordained a priest in 1815. Three years later he was made parish priest of Ars, a remote French hamlet, where his reputation as a confessor and director of souls made him known throughout the Christian World. Accustomed to the most severe austerities, beleaguered by swarms of penitents, and besieged by the devil, this great mystic manifested imperturbable patience. He was a wonderworker, loved by the crowds, but he retained a childlike simplicity, and he remains to this day the living image of the priest after the heart of Christ.

He heard confessions of people from all over the world for sixteen hours each day. His life was filled with works of charity and love. It is recorded that even the staunchest of sinners were converted at his mere word. He died August 4th, 1859, and was canonized May 31st, 1925.

Feast Day August 4th
Universally known as the ‘Curé of Ars’

Message From the Prior Provincial of the Irish Carmelites, Fr Fintan Burke:
My words are for those young men who have given some thought to dedicating their lives to God in the Carmelite Order. The call of God is a gentle but persistent call. When the Lord calls he expects an answer.
