Humility
In The Ascent of Mount Carmel, John of the Cross wrote the following:
To arrive at being all
desire to be nothing
In this nakedness the spirit
finds its quietitude and rest, for in
Coveting nothing nothing, nothing tires it
by pulling it up, and nothing oppresses it
by pushing it down, because it is in
the center of its humility
Consider the following points:
- The alternative to making our lives into an expression of
our own ambitions and will is to align ourselves
to God. Is God
really first in your daily living?
- To make real the indwelling of the Holy Spirit we
need to enter into the life of the Son so
that the Father may
enter our life
St Paul Phil 2:6-8 made the following point:
5 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,
6 who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
as something to be exploited,
7 but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
being bom in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
8 he humbled himself
and became obedient to the
point of death - even death on a cross.
- Ask yourself "Is the "same mind (be) in me (you) that
was in Christ Jesus"?
What does it mean for me to believe this?
- Will I empty myself for him as he emptied himself for me?
Can I start this self-emptying now, today, and walk with Jesus
during the season of Lent and after?
Take, Lord, and receive
all my liberty,
my memory, my understanding, and my entire will,
all that I have and possess.
You have given all to me.
To you 0 Lord, I return it.
All is yours,
Dispose of it wholly according to your will.
Give me your love and your grace;
This is sufficient for me.
Amen.
