Each day, for nine days you petition Our
Blessed Lady for all your special needs. It is a time of prayer
and reflection that will bring you closer to the heart of Jesus
her Son.
The prayer Flos Carmeli (Flower of Carmel) was composed in the
thirteenth century, supposedly by St. Simon Stock in answer to
which he received the Scapular from Our Blessed Mother.
First Day O Flower of Carmel, blossoming vine, splendour of heaven, most
special virgin and humble mother who gave birth to the Son
of God, still ever remaining a virgin, look with favour on
us in our need. O Star of the Sea. (Mention Petitions)
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.
Second Day Most Holy Mary, Our Mother, in your great love for us you gave
us the holy Scapular of Mount Carmel in response to the prayers
of your Carmelite Children. Help us now to wear it faithfully
and with devotion. May it be a sign to us of our love for your
Son, Jesus. (Mention Petitions)
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.
Third Day O Mary, Chosen daughter of the Father, you gave us the Scapular
as an outward sign by which we might be known as your faithful
children. May we always wear it with honour by avoiding sin
and imitating your virtues. Help us to be faithful to this
desire of ours. (Mention Petitions)
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.
Fourth Day O Mary, Joy of the new Israel, when you gave us the Scapular
as our habit, you called us to be not only servants, but also
your own children. We ask you to gain for us from your Son
the grace to live as your children in joy, peace and love. (Mention Petitions)
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.
Fifth Day O Mother of Fair Love, through your goodness we are called, as
your children to live in the spirit of Carmel. Help us to live
in charity with one another, prayerful as Elijah of old and
mindful of our call to minister to God's people. (Mention Petitions)
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.
Sixth Day O Mother most Amiable, with loving care you covered us with your
Scapular as a shield of defence against the Evil One. Through
your assistance may we bravely struggle and overcome the powers
of evil, always open to your Son Jesus Christ. (Mention Petitions)
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.
Seventh Day O Mary, Help of Christians, you assured us that wearing your
Scapular worthily would keep us safe from harm. Protect us
in both body and soul with your continual aid. May all that
we do be pleasing to your Son and to you. (Mention Petitions)
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.
Eight Day O Mother of Mercy, you give us hope that through your Scapular
promise we might enjoy your special protection in the daily
struggle to be faithful to your Son and to you. Be our comfort
and our hope. Grant that we may speedily enjoy after death
the blessed company of Jesus and the saints. (Mention Petitions)
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.
Ninth Day O Most Holy Mother of Mount Carmel, you have given assurance
of your Motherly love and help to those faithful to you and
to your Son. We glory in wearing your holy Scapular which makes
us members of your family of Carmel, through which we shall
have your powerful protection in life, at death and even after
death. (Mention Petitions)
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.
O Gate of Heaven, look down with love
on all those now in their last agony.
O Virgin Flower of Carmel, look down graciously
on all those in need of health.
O Mother of our Saviour, look down mercifully
on all those who do not know that
they are numbered among your children.
O Queen of All Saints, look down tenderly
on the poor souls.
The Brown Scapular Wearing the Brown Scapular promises the wearer a share in the
prayers and good works of the entire Carmelite Family. It is
a privileged sign of affiliation to the Carmelite Order and
is a highly endowed sacramental.
A sign of dedication to Mary, it reminds us to walk in her footsteps
in the following of her Son.
Tradition tells us that Our Lady appeared to St Simon Stock at
Aylesford in England in 1251, when he was praying for the survival
of the Carmelites in a troubled Europe of the time. She was holding
out to him the Scapular.
The Brown Scapular as well as the Rosary is also linked to the
appearance of Our Lady to the three children at Fatima. Her final
appearance on the 13th October 1917 was as Our Lady of Mount
Carmel with the Scapular.
The Brown Scapular is not
•
a magical charm to protect you
•
an automatic guarantee of salvation
•
an excuse for not living up to the demands of the Christian life.
The Brown Scapular is a sign which
•
has been approved by the Church for over seven centuries
•
introduces people into the Carmelite Family
•
calls on us to live out the ideal of this religious family: intimate
friendship with God in prayer
•
fosters our special devotion to the Blessed Virgin
•
points to a renewed hope of encountering God in eternal life
with the help of Mary's protection and intercession.
Prayer to our Lady of Mount Carmel O most blessed and immaculate
Virgin,
ornament and splendour of Carmel,
you regard with an eye of special kindness
those who wear your blessed habit.
Look down benignly upon me and cover me
with the mantle of your special protection.
Strengthen my weakness
with your power;
enlighten the darkness of my mind with your
wisdom;
increase in me faith, hope and charity;
adorn my soul
with such graces and blessings
as will ever be pleasing to your divine Son
and to you.
Assist me in life and console me in death
with your most amiable
presence and
present me to the most august Trinity
as your devoted servant and child
that I may eternally bless and
praise you in heaven.
Amen.
