The Jesse Tree
We all know what a Family Tree is. It is where
we trace back our ancestors and our family history. It is from
our family that we first come to know who we are:
* it is from and within our family that we learn and
know what love is
* it is from within the family that we find a home
* we feel safe and protected within the family circle.
But we belong to another family as well. We belong to God’s
family. And that family too has its history and its ancestors
in faith.
So during these four weeks before Christmas, which the Church
calls Advent - we, the family of faith trace our family tree
- The Jesse Tree. On it we
place symbols of our ancestors in faith and of some of the big
events in their lives - events that
have shaped our lives.
We trace God's promise of a Saviour, going back to the very
beginning of Creation and we end on Christmas Eve when we place
the final symbol of the Birth of Jesus in Bethlehem.

History of the Jesse Tree
In the eighth century before the birth of Jesus, the prophet
Isaiah foretold the nature and virtues of the Messiah - he
was to
be a descendant of King David, whose father was called Jesse.
A shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse,
and from his roots a bud shall blossom.
The Spirit of the Lord shall rest on him;
a spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
a spirit of counsel and of strength,
a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord.
Is11:13
The artists of the Middle Ages drew on this text of Isaiah for
the theme of the Tree of Jesse. It was this tradition that guided
many artists when the subject first became popular in the first
half of the twelfth century.
The first notable example is attributed to Abbot Suger (1081-1151).
In 1144, he commissioned a stained-glass window for the Abbey
of St. Denis near Paris. Unfortunately this window was destroyed
in the course of time but a version (25ft x 9ft) was installed
in Chartres Cathedral in 1150 and this survives intact to this
day.
In this window, a tree grows from a sleeping Jesse. Along the
trunk, a number of kings of Judah are shown. Along the branches,
stand the prophets who preached the coming of the Messiah.
The popularity of the Jesse Tree however declined towards the
end of the sixteenth century. It was not until 1949, when an
American nun decided to develop the Jesse theme in what we now
call the Jesse Tree.
