WYD CROSS HISTORIC VISIT TO DUBLIN, INCLUDING KNOCKLYON.
Fr. Philip writes….
The World Youth Day Cross and Icon of Our Lady will arrive in Dublin
Airport next Saturday morning (Nov. 8). The
Cross, which is 380 cm high and weighs 31 kilos, was given to
young people by Pope John Paul II after the Holy Year in Rome
in 1985. Since then it has been carried by thousands of young
people in over 24 countries in 5 Continents. It has travelled
to all the different World Youth Days. In the build up to the
next WYD in Cologne 2005 it is making a pilgrimage through a
number of European Countries.
CYC (Catholic Youth Care) are organising the visit
to Dublin. Because a large youth group represented
Knocklyon at the last WYD in Toronto 2002, they
are giving our Parish the honour of hosting the
Cross from the evening of Sunday November 23rd
until 12noon the following day. So
we need all hands on deck to get things organised,
particularly those in the 18 – 35 age bracket.
But first things first: CYC would like as many young people as
possible to attend the official welcoming ceremony at Dublin
Airport next Saturday, which will include prayer, music and mime.
The Cross will then be carried in procession to Whitehall Parish
Church on the Swords Road and on to St. Kevin’s Oratory
in the Pro-Cathedral for a special youth mass at 8pm.
Could you be present at Dublin
airport next Saturday and help carry the Cross
as far as Whitehall?
If so, you might let me know by coming along to
a short meeting before Fr. Peter McVerry’s
talk this Tuesday (Nov 4) at 7.00pm in the Iona
Centre.
