The club is currently running in the Community Centre every Friday night from 8.00 pm until 9.30 pm with approximately thirty teenagers aged 13 – 16 years. However, if more volunteers come forward the club will be able to accommodate more members.

Foróige currently oversees 416 clubs throughout Ireland, the main objective of which is “to enable young people to involve themselves consciously and actively in their own development and in the development of society”. It also provides the training for volunteers so if anyone feels they could make a contribution please get in touch.

The activities promoted in Foróige clubs include: Arts and Crafts, Sporting Activities, Community Projects, Fundraising, Learning a new skill, Quizzes, Outdoor Pursuits, Discos, Environmental Projects, Training, and Interclub Events

The benefits accruing to the young people, according to Foroige, are: Responsibility, Friendship, Learning a new skill, Confidence building, Getting involved in the community, Safe Socialising, Leadership, Fun, Mixing with peers and adults, and Chance to get involved in positive activities.

The club in Knocklyon has just gotten underway in the Knocklyon Youth & Community Centre. The members have elected their own committee to decide what the agenda will be for each week and they hope to go and visit another club in the area that is run by Foróige.

At the moment the sports hall is divided up into three sections and they play three different sports. In the canteen upstairs they can play board games and buy refreshments. Members pay a small fee every week to go to the club. They are currently learning hip-hop dancing under the direction of a professional instructor.

The club will finish its season at the end of May and resume again in September.
